Start with the right document.
Create an engagement invoice that shows the client which consulting work is being billed. Use the engagement and workstream references to organize research, workshops, analysis or other agreed services. For hourly billing, enter approved hours as the quantity; for an agreed milestone, describe the milestone and use the agreed fee. Keep internal effort and client-billable work separate. A retainer arrangement may need its own treatment of included hours, additional work and prior payments, so check the agreement before calculating the bill. Use concise descriptions that support review without disclosing confidential advice or sensitive client information in the invoice.
